The Tennessee Civil War Trails winds it way through the cities, towns and countryside of middle and western Tennessee.  Several areas of interest include the Shiloh Civil War Battlefied in Shiloh, TN, and Cherry Mansion in Savannah, TN which General Grant used as his headquarters.

Clifton is one of the stops on the Tennessee Civil War Trails.  In December, 1862, Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest conducted a raid in the Clifton area.  Later Union forces occupied Clifton and burned the town.  The current Presbyterian Church was used by the Union Army as a hospital and escaped devastation.  The front of the church still bears the scars of where Union soldiers pulled out part of the brick wall to enlarge the front opening.  One can still see where the cannonballs hit the church.

Clifton Marina is a full servce marina to meet all of your boating needs.  It also has two pontoon boats for daily rental.  A great way to spend a family outing on the river.

T. S. Stribling Museum -  Thomas Sigimund (T. S.) Stribling won the Pulitzer Prize in 1933 his novel, The Store.  The Stribling home has been turned into a Museum and Library.  On August 30, 2013 a new exhibit, These Hills Once Spoke:  The Life and Legacy of T. S. Stribling was dedicated at the museum.

Surrounding Area to Clifton

Shiloh National Military Park in Shiloh, Tennessee  "No soldier who took part in the two-day engagement in Shiloh ever spoiled for a fight again, said one Union veteran."  Shiloh Battlefield commenorates the April, 1862 battle in Tennessee.  The Shiloh National Park is a 4200 acre area dedicated to this April battle and also has another 21 acres in Corinth, Mississippi.  Within the park are several indian mounds.  Within some of the mounds are remains of buildings from about 800 years ago.   

Pickwick Dam and State Park  Pickwick was a riverboat stop dating from the 1840's.  In the 1930's the Tennessee Valley Authority chose the site as one of the dams on the Tennessee River.  The dam and state park has many outdoor activities throughout the year.

Tennessee River Museum Located in Savannah, TN the museum tells the story of the lower Tennessee River Valley through seven permanent exhibts and other activities for children and adults alike. 

Cherry Mansion  Mr. Cherry was a prominent citizen of Savannah, TN and a strong supporter of the Union and had strong pro-union views.  Mr. Cherry's wife and family were very pro-confederate.  Many families had opposing views and loyalties during the Civil War.  Mr. Cherry opened his home to the Union army and became headquarters for General Grant.  Even during these troubled times, the Cherry home was still a place for many social events.  General Grant and others were often in the Cherry home.  Knowing the views and loyalties of Mrs. Cherry and her family, General Grant would take off his Union coat while in their company.  Tours are available.

Within an hour to hour and a half drive from Clifton are several interesting things to see.

Helen Keller's Birthplace  -  Helen Keller was born in 1880 in Tuscumbia, AL at the homeplace called Ivy Green.  At the age of 19 months, Helen was diagnosed with a serious disease that left her both deaf and blind.  In 1887 her teacher, Anne Sullivan, had a breakthrough that led to Helen living a very productive life.  Tours are available daily for both her birthplace and the cottage where she and Anne shared for many years.  More information on the life of Helen Keller along with tour information is available at Helenkellerbirthplace.org.

Rattlesnack Saloon- Also located in the Tuscumbia, AL area is the Rattlesnake Saloon. This unique bar/restaurant was built up under a bluff with seating in a large cave and on top of the bluff. It's a one-of-a-kind experience out in the country far from any big cities.  The food is great and affordable. Usually you can catch a band playing in the cave area at night.  The saloon is open only on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.  For more information: rattlesnakesaloon.net

Tom Hendrix's Wall of Tears - Located 8 miles outside of Florence, AL off the Natchez Trace is Tom Hendrix's Wall of Tears built stone by stone in honor of his great-great grandmother.  She was part of the group of Native Americans making the trip to OK along the Trail of Tears.

The Natchez Trace Parkway is a 444-mile drive through exceptional scenery and 10,000 years of North American history that winds it's way through Lewis County and southern Wayne County.
